Northeast Atlanta Homes For Sale

Cutting Your Moving Costs!

The biggest money saver is, of course, to move yourself.  Friends may be inexperienced, but they are much more careful with your things!

1.  Do the  packing and unpacking yourself!  Ask for estimates without the packing and with the packing.  Get free boxes from the grocery or liquor stores.  Sometimes, the moving company has used cartons.  I also have a good place to buy boxes cheaper and packing paper, and they deliver!  Make sure your packing is covered under the liability policy.

2.  Limit the weight of what is being moved!  Maybe you need to get rid of the pool table, swing set, appliances, piano, work bench, lawn tractor.  They may have sentimental value, however, so that you just can't!  If you move these items, many will have to have professional care at the other end.

3.  Make a floor plan of where you are moving to!  Get rid of items that won't fit.  If you plan on getting new furniture when you move into your new residence, get rid of the old furniture now and don't move it!

4.  Have a Garage sale or donate items to charity!  Unwanted items can be sold at a garage sale or give to charity so that others can use them.  Be sure to ask for a receipt.  This can be important at tax time!

5.  Move when others are not!  Most seem to move  in the summer because of school.  Movers even charge premiums to move between June 1 and September 30.  The biggest moving weekend is July 4th, so schedule well ahead of time or you may not be able to get a mover. .

6.  Mail your books instead of moving them!  The post office has special book rates.  Remember to take your old phone books for reference if you think you will need them.  Most people now have their needed contacts in some sort of file on their computer, so the heavy phone books should not be needed.

Moving Checklist

Planning is key!

The logistics of relocating can be crazy, in order to help keep things straight it is good to have a "Plan". Having a plan in place can assist in preventing unexpected problems from arising and to reduce the overall stress of moving. There are many items to consider in the move from departure to destination. For example, you may need to find a job for your partner, arrange local housing, schooling, medical and banking facilities, transportation and much more. Here are a few items that you may find useful

Request this checklist of items to remember when moving by completing the form below.  The checklist will be emailed to you automatically.

The Items Your Movers WON'T MOVE!

1.  Anything Perishable!  Plants, Pets, Frozen Food, Open Food Containers, Anything from Your Refrigerator.  You must be responsible for these items by carrying them with you in the car, or give them to neighbors or family, or throw them out!  PLEASE... do not throw out your pets... take them with you or ship them with special handling.  Resources are on my page 'Moving With Pets .'

2.  Movers will not take hazardous materials, such as;
         Paints, thinners, oils, varnishes
         Motor fuels and oils
         Aerosol cans, including hair spray
         Candles
         Explosives, including fire crackers
         Corrosives

3.  Any bottled goods or food in glass jars

4.  Potentially harmful liquids, such as nail polish remover, bleach, or perfume.

5.  Check with the state and/or the movers regarding regulations governing the transportation of firearms and ammunitions.

6.  Small Items of Value, such as; Jewelry and Furs, Stamp and Coin Collections, Notes, Securities, Stock Certificates, Unused Tickets, Precious Stones, other Rare or Irreplaceable Objects.

Also, please check the insurance coverage.  Make sure you are also covered by your homeowner's insurance.  Even if you buy insurance through the moving company, they have a low amount of coverage.

The last move I did, we had to put our things in storage for 3 weeks, which is a whole other story.  They lost my 8-foot Heritage couch which was worth over $11,000 at the time.  Many other items were lost and others were broken.  We had paid extra for insurance, and thought we were covered.  Well, that coverage was only $8500!  To claim more, we would have to prove that we had purchased the items, and that they were not broken prior to the move.  Who can do that?  So, just read the fine print when you contract with a moving company.  This was a well-known national company that we had used.
