Gwinnett County
Gwinnett County was named after Button Gwinnett, who was one of the original signers of Declaration of Independence. He was the Governor of Georgia, briefly in 1777. However, he was mortally wounded in a dual in 1777 and he died 3 days later. He is buried in Savannah.
The Creek and Cherokee Indians had occupied portions of Gwinnett County until 1789 when they conceded to the United States Government. Two of the earliest white settlements was between Hog Mountain and Old Town Suwanee. More families came and settled between Hog Mountain and Winder (known then as Jug Tavern). The actual county was not formed until 1818.
It was not until 1871 that the Southern Railroad was completed between Norcross, Duluth, Suwanee, and Buford. In 1891, the railroad connected Suwanee and Lawrenceville. A branch to Loganville was added in 1898.
Now, there are 15 towns in Gwinnett County. The ones that are not listed separately below are Hog Mountain, Gloster, Centerville, Luxomni, and Pinckneyville.
